We are offering a special weekend getaway including 2 nights in our spacious guestrooms with king size beds, breakfasts, and refreshments. This is a wonderful time to enjoy Friday night music, excellent local food, main street shops and galleries, Saturday morning at the Tallgrass Preserve, Saturday afternoon courthouse tour, scenic drive (or trail bike) through the Flint Hills, and rest and relaxation on our wonderful veranda's, and hike to the Chase State Lake Falls. The sunsets at the Preserve are stunning. Please email springstreetreservations@gmail.com to plan your visit. What a beautiful evening under the lacy leaves of the walnut trees on the banks of the creek in Council Grove. A walking trail now ambles along from main street to the Kaw Mission. There you will find a Kansas Historian working to preserve the history of those who lived in this area centuries ago. First the Indians and then the pioneers. This was an exciting place late in the 1800's as the people voyaged across North America enjoying the freedom of a new land. Finding grasslands, trees for building and furniture making, a climate for growing food, and suitable for animals grazing the prairie. The people already further west and at the Pacific needed goods and this was the way of shipping and commerce in the day. This pleasant evening it was a delight to hear the music of the Tallgrass Express. You will often find them at special Flint Hills event. They share music of guitar, fiddle and banjo. And words and stories to learn about the people and the region here. Annie Wilson, teacher, singer, song-writer does this along with organizing Friday evening jam sessions at the Prairie PastTimes artist cooperative in Cottonwood Falls.
The hills are now a lush green and as you get closer you realize there are many other plants amidst the grasses as well. Nature has decorated the hills with many colors such as orange, purple, blue, bright pink and yellow. The butterflies are happily fluttering about the Milkweed. The prairie birds fly and perch amidst the grasses, and their songs are so sweet along with the breeze and fresh air. You can walk the Tallgrass Prairie paths or enjoy a ride and hear the Park Rangers share more about this ancient environment.
Thoroughly enjoyed the Flint Hills Rodeo. It is an idyllic setting in the midst of the rolling green hills on the first weekend of June. As the sun is setting the music, the professional riders, and the clown make for great family fun. It's very exciting to see how long the cowboys can stay on the bucking horses and who keeps their hat on. The bull riding is thrilling as these muscular and wild looking creatures give their riders a great ride. The cowgirls race around the arena between competitions and also around the barrels. Always fun to see the rodeo clown as he keeps an out for the participants and their safety and also provides entertainment for the crowd. We serve breakfast each morning for our guests and our guests enjoy this spacious old home with the modern amenities, king size beds and extra beds for families. It's coming up soon get your tickets at the Rodeo website. Please email springstreetreservations@gmail.com to reserve your room. We have more information to share about having a great time Rodeo weekend.
Another lovely weekend in Chase county! We had a fun day of fishing, playing at Swope Park, playing at the Strong City Park, and listening to the sounds of the trains. Our two year old wanted to know where those sounds were coming from so her adventurous aunt showed her the way and ended up at the caboose near the Strong City depot. Another fun stop as they all climbed on board. The falls at the walking bridge are especially interesting as there is a lot of watering rushing over them. Everyone enjoyed hiking to the falls at the Chase County lake. The gardening is going great at Spring Street, excited about the fall plantings and the previous plants and seeds that have made an appearance this spring. There will be a lot of weeding to do with the abundant rains. But the green hills are amazing and quite a sight to enjoy! Please make plans for weekend getaway and email me at springstreetreservations@gmail.com to plan your visit soon! It was a beautiful evening on the prairie for the Country Barn Dance. The window of the hay loft and dance floor was open wide to the fields and the stars. We are new fans of the Matt Engels Band as they played and sang the dance favorites. Snacks and beverages were plentiful and the hospitality gracious. As we walked the farm and visited the kiosk we could imagine what it was like over 125 years ago and the time that the people here relied on the man power, horse power, and the earth and it's fruit. There are pictures documenting this time when the cattle and the pigs would gain, and the corn grew well, providing animal feed and corn meal. Nothing was wasted and everything was utilized to the best of their abilities. The primary goals were caring for the families. And, the egg money even provided a college education for four children. Many events take place at this historic farm and ranch. Weekends are open to visitors. Prairie talks take place from time to time. Be sure and fan the FB to know what is happening at Pioneer Bluffs.
Excited for this weekends activities which include hike and yoga at the Tallgrass Preserve, meet the artists at this Saturday's symphony silent auction gallery, and Saturday night barn dance at Pioneer Bluffs with a live band. It's looking like another beautiful weekend of sunshine. All the shops and galleries will be open. And you never go hungry in the Flint Hills. Kellers Feed and Wine, Wagon Wheel, Jacilito Cantina, Grand Central and Ad Astra are cooking this weekend! Yummy!
We have guest rooms each weekend and a special offer in May. Book a room and get one free so you can bring friends. We have a breakfast table seating 10. And, an open kitchen with fresh veggies, trail snacks, coffee, tea and water.... and chocolate of course! Excitement is high for Rodeo weekend! Please inquire about a weekend stay at springstreetreservations@gmail.com. And, looking forward to a beautiful sunset and learning about the stars at Symphony on the Prairie. Gained some personal perspetive from one disc golfer who hopes to join in competition another year. I am hearing the Clover Cliff Disc Golf course is being enjoyed by the disc golfers. We have availability at springstreetreservations@gmail.com if you may possibly venture out this next beautiful weekend to see what all the hub bub is about and see some Disc Golfing and maybe you can join in. Check it out and see if you can. We are offering again this weekend a book one and get one room with king size beds and homed cooked breakfasts each morning. The professionals will be at the Emporia Country Club this weekend, but there will be other's competing at Boyce Baumgarder Memorial at Swope Park in Cottonwood Falls and at Clover Cliff Ranch. It will for sure be a relaxing way to enjoy the weather and the charming town of Cottonwood Falls. Main Street (Broadway Street) is always a good visit for antiques and artwork or a stop at the fabric shop. Enjoy the local cuisine at Keller's Feed and Wine, Grand Central Hotel and Ad Astra in next door Strong City. You may want to bring your trail bikes as well. And, also take some time to see the Tallgrass National Preserve or enjoy the fishing at Chase County lake.
Going north at the Kansas Turnpike Cassoday exit you now get the pleasure of driving into the beautiful green hills that you have been scanning as you speed along the Turnpike. But now you can take your time and enjoy the turns. There are a couple of stopping points and overlooks especially created for your enjoyment. Each ravine and creek has tinges of purple against the brush and green hills. There a few other white blossoms as well. More and more purple as you drive along the winding Scenic 177 Byway. Gazing into the trees with hues of purple and hints of green in the upcoming canopy fill the creek bottoms. The cattle trucks are also joining in with the millions of cattle that will graze the grass this summer. The cowboys are ready at the pens waiting to release the beef to graze the greening hills. It is Spring in the Flint Hills. We look forward to hosting guests at the Spring Street Retreat. We're excited for you to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside and this charming little town.
